In the UK, a typical 800 W plug-in solar system can save around £95–£155 a year. Savings come from the electricity you use directly during the day; actual figures depend on orientation, shading, location and how much of the generated power your household consumes. The system can pay for itself in as little as 3 years depending on installation location.
-
Statutory Instrument SI 2026/848 amends the Plugs and Sockets Regulations and related electricity safety rules.
Devices must meet the government’s Interim Product Specification (max 800 VA, 3.5 A).
You must notify your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) under G98 within 28 days of connecting the system.
Products sold after the changeover will carry the correct UK plug and safety markings.
Here at voltPV we will ensure all these requirements are met.

Low cost — Significantly cheaper than a rooftop or ground mounted system.
Short payback period — Often 3.5–7 years (or 4–6 years in many modelled cases), quicker than most rooftop installations due to the low upfront cost.
Ideal for renters and flat dwellers — No roof access or permanent structural changes needed. Under the Renters’ Rights Act 2025, landlords in England cannot unreasonably refuse low-impact, reversible energy upgrades like portable balcony systems.
Portable — Unplug and take the system with you when you move house, preserving your investment.
Supports energy security and lower bills — Helps households reduce reliance on the grid and fossil-fuel markets without the high barrier of traditional solar, particularly useful amid high electricity prices.

Balconies — One of the most popular options, especially for flats. South-facing balconies perform best; east- or west-facing ones still generate useful power if reasonably unshaded. Panels typically clamp to railings (no drilling needed in many cases). Vertical mounting is common and practical but reduces output compared with an angled setup.
Gardens — Often the highest-performing option for houses. Use a ground-mount frame or A-frame for optimal tilt and orientation (aim for due south). You can also lean panels against a south-facing fence or wall. Gardens usually allow better positioning, more space, and easier cable runs than balconies, with typical annual generation for an 800 W south-facing kit in the range of roughly 650–800+ kWh depending on region.
Sheds, garages, and outbuildings — Mount on the roof (especially if south- or west-facing) or walls. These keep panels out of the way, avoid taking up garden space, and often allow short cable runs to the house.
Patios, terraces, and external walls — Suitable with secure mounting and good sunlight. Weighted frames work well on flat surfaces; wall mounts are possible if permitted.
Flat roofs (e.g., extensions or outbuildings) — Use angled brackets for better tilt toward the sun.
